How to influence event clients effectively

When clients hire you as their event planner, it means they believe in your vision and your values. It means they found someone who they can trust.

They begin to set their bars high and expect that you will deliver things to them the way they wanted.

But things don’t and shouldn't always go their way and this is where the conflict begins.

We have individual preferences. We all came from diverse background. Our ideas and interest may sometimes be poles apart.

There will be times when your client will refuse your advice and will end up pursuing his or her own or someone else’s advice.

You can’t let this happen. You need to be in control of the situation before anything blows up your face. You are the expert and you can’t let your clients drive their own path to disaster.

They need to trust you enough to drive their event safely because you know your way to it. But often times, clients can be difficult because it drives them nuts when things don’t go the way they wanted.

You need to let them know the importance of making the alternate decision and finding other options. You need to let them understand why you can’t risk taking the route they wanted – without offending them or making them feel like their choices and decisions are ridiculous.

Here are 3 ways to influence your event clients effectively

#1 Make them trust and like You.

We all tend to listen to people that we like and trust.

There are people that are simply charming, adorable and easy to get along with. People with a positive mindset. People who can carry a good conversation and bring out the good in people.

This is the kind of person you need to be. If you're not there yet, atleast you can learn how:

Trust factor is something very important if you want someone to listen to you.

Clients are just often scared to try new things. But if you have a strong conviction that things will work out fine and that you got their back, they will back down and listen to you.

Equip yourself with clothes that sums up your personality, credentials and experience. You need to stand out from the crowd.

When clients see how you prepared for the meeting, you instantly become a person with great power and authority. They will surely be all ears to whatever you have to say.

So don’t underestimate the power of suiting and dressing up.

Amp up your wardrobe and wow them in your meetings.

Clients listen to people they like.

And how will they like you?

  1. Smile and be confident when communicating

  2. Listen to them attentively

  3. Ask questions and be interested with them.

  4. Compliment them once in a while

  5. Be genuine with your intentions

Try to not to be overly friendly though to a point of being annoying.

Dial it down to a professional level of congeniality.

Show them that you’re someone they can rely on but establish boundaries so they know exactly that you’re the expert here, so they need to listen to you.

Being likable means, they can easily approach and call you when they need to. They can have a relaxed time with you in a coffee shop to discuss event plans without having to feel like everything is all business.

Being likeable means, they look forward seeing you every time because they’re excited to hear about your suggestions.

When people like you, they tend to forget that they have different preferences than yours. Liking you is easily converted to liking your ideas.

#2 Make them feel important

make your clients feel important

Don’t we all feel good when someone listens to us or compliments us or appreciates us?

In Dale Carnegie’s book, , he mentioned that there is one ultimate human longing that needs to be fulfilled, almost as deep and as imperious as food and sleep, which is the

By making your clients feel important, they would be more inclined to listen to you.

Be interested with them. Ask them questions. It could be related to the event or their personal life. Try as much as you can to connect with them.

It doesn’t always have to be business-related. It could be anything of similar interest.

What do they want? What do they need? What are they looking for? What upsets them? What frustrates them? What scares them?

Do they like hanging out in coffee shops or they enjoy the weekend at home watching re-runs of FRIENDS?

Knowing these things will give you an idea on how to deal with them. Most importantly, you will give them a feeling that you care about what they think. They will easily open up to you and trust you with bigger things because you value your relationship with them.

#3 Commit to them

commitment is very important in event planning

When your clients see how committed you are to your craft, the more they will trust you with every step of the way.

They will even give you full authority in making decisions for them if they see how you devote time and effort to research the best materials, how you incorporate the latest trends and how much you immerse yourself with their vision.

It will be easier for you to change their minds and have them accept your ideas because they know that once you commit yourself in implementing something, you will go all the way to achieve great results.
